No matter what age you are, one of the things you will NOT want to have is dark circles and bags under your eyes. It’s up there as one of the things we don’t like, along with spots, blackheads, wrinkles and age spots.
Why do we get dark circles?
We get dark circles under the eyes because the skin is thinner in this area compared to other areas of the face. This area, supported by a muscle(the ocular muscle), is constantly in use to express our emotions. Fat in the area can droop as the skin loses elasticity with age. And finally, we discover that dark circles and puffiness around the eyes are hereditary.
We asked one of our facial experts, Dr Lisa Godfrey at the Castle Clinic in Nottingham to give us some tips on how to prevent the problem:
Prevention
Prevention is better than cure and sometimes this can just mean making sure you are sleeping well and drinking enough water to keep hydrated. Sleep with your head slightly elevated if you suffer from puffy eyes.
Protect the skin on the face including around the eyes with a good protective moisturiser and make sure it’s protected from the damaging effects of UVA rays. When applying products to the area a tip is to use the ring finger as it applies less pressure. Circle products from the outside inwards under the eyes to prevent dragging the skin. Use products designed for around the eyes as some facial products will just be too heavy for this sensitive part of the face.
Take care of the delicate skin, always making sure you remove make up. Use the right product for this and don’t rub hard over the eye area to get the make-up off. Instead use a cotton disc soaked in make-up remover to dissolve the products, then just gently wipe away.
What are the Possible causes of eye bags and dark circles?
Smoking – Known to reduce the skins circulation and limit the supply of oxygen needed to keep the skin healthy. Added to this smoking can cause the eyes to water and become irritated, so try and avoid environments where you expose yourself to smoking too.
Lifestyle – lack of sleep too much stress, alcohol and a poor diet can influence the skin and one of the first places for it to show is around the eyes. FACT no need to say more we know it.
Genetic factors. In a recent study published in the Journal of The American Academy of Dermatology, researchers subjected 158 women between the ages of 20 and 74 to DNA tests and skin analysis to find out how important genetic factors are when it comes to skin changes over the years. The answer was definitely yes: genetics influence the skin! Processes such as better cell renewal, greater collagen production and a better response to oxidative stress are all genetic. So, if your parents look younger than their years count those blessings!
Products for the eye area
To counteract problems, you can use products with active ingredients such as caffeine to stimulate drainage. Thanks to its lipolytic properties, it has a fluid reducing effect on the bags under the eyes. Hyaluronic acid is a definite winner as an ingredient in this area, its hydrostatic (draws water to it) and it’s found naturally in the skin. It is a perfect product to boost hydration. Strictly to do both in the morning and in the evening.
If you suffer from dark shadows, try bioflavonoids with arnica and butcher’s broom extracts, which help the microcirculation a lot.
We asked Lisa to list her 5 eye products which are.

Exercise your eyes not just using them to see.
Facial gymnastics or even just eye exercises will help. Small daily gestures can facilitate circulation and prevent fluid retention. Here are four “exercises” to do every day.
– Close your eyes by raising your eyebrows and try to widen your eyelids
– Gently squeeze the eye area but without using too much force
– Try to squint your eyes against the resistance of your hands, then gently release your grip and repeat it several times.
– Open your eyes and mouth wide to eliminate all existing wrinkles (or at least try!)
Endosphères Therapy for the treatment of dark circles and eye bags?
So, we can see that day to day activities and factors such as sun, stress and lack of sleep have a negative effect on our skin, especially in the eye area. The Endosphères facial treatment remodels the texture and structure of the tissue at the dermis. It stimulates the production of elastin and collagen fibres giving the skin a restored elasticity. The improved results appear in the epidermis in a few sessions.
The rotating microspheres use the mechanism of Compressive Microvibration to create a continuous and repeated stimulation on the muscle receptors. This causes the muscle fibres to relax, but it also stimulates microcirculation for a final relaxing and rejuvenating effect. This allows to perform a draining action on bags and swellings that form in the area around the eyes
Endosphères works on your face in a completely natural, painless and non-invasive way, first restoring the balance of physiological conditions in the vascular and lymphatic system, and then carrying out a complete face rejuvenation by encouraging the production of skin.
